The morning that follows
"Pray without ceasing." — 1 Thessalonians 5:17
The prayer this morning was short and I did not try to make it longer.
There are mornings when the prayer says everything it has to say in two sentences and there is nothing dishonest about stopping. I said what I had and I sat with the quiet after and Biscuit was on the porch and the fan was going and the coffee was the right temperature for July, which is barely warm because the house is already warm enough.
I have been told by people who know more about prayer than I do that short prayers are as good as long ones. I do not know if that is true in general but I know it is true for me this morning. The prayer was finished before I finished the coffee and that is a Tuesday in the middle of July and there is nothing wrong with it.
Ruby keeps a collection of prayers at her kitchen table. You can find them here.
