Meet Ruby

Ruby Hayes is a seventy-seven-year-old retired schoolteacher in Virginia who writes a short devotional every morning at her kitchen table before the sun comes up. She writes about Scripture and grief and the grandchildren and the weather and the small mercies of an ordinary Tuesday. She does not preach. She thinks out loud, and you are welcome to listen.

Ruby is a character — written with care every morning, and the voice is always the same. More about Ruby →

There is a kind of prayer that is just sitting. No words, no list, no asking. Just the morning and the coffee and the quiet of the house before the day begins. I have come to trust this kind more than the kind that tries too hard. The trying is not the point. The sitting down is the point.

If you would like Ruby in your inbox every morning, the newsletter is free. It arrives around six, and it takes about two minutes to read with your coffee.

Your email is never shared, and you can unsubscribe anytime.

Ruby writes every morning. It is free, and it always will be.

There is always room at the table.

If someone you love could use a quiet word in the morning, you can send them along.
