The day after
"This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." — Psalm 118:24
The morning after is always quieter than I expect. I do not know what I expect but whatever it is the morning does not deliver it and instead it delivers a Friday in July that looks exactly like every other Friday in July and I find that I am grateful for the ordinary shape of it.
I watered this morning. I ate toast. Junebug sat on the back of the kitchen chair and watched me the way she watches me, which is with the conviction that I am going to do something interesting if she waits long enough. I have never done anything interesting enough to justify this surveillance but she remains committed to the project.
It is hot and it will be hotter and I do not have anywhere to go and nothing to do that can not wait until the morning is cooler, which was yesterday and also tomorrow and every day between now and September.
Lord, the morning came. It does that.
Ruby keeps a collection of prayers at her kitchen table. You can find them here.
