"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace." — Numbers 6:24-26

It is Sunday evening and the holiday is behind us.

Jack turned twelve on Wednesday and he is the same boy he was at eleven except taller and quieter, which is how boys grow, in silence and in inches. Dan brought the family out and we had cake and Jack blew out the candles and Olivia clapped and the dog got underfoot the way the dog does when there is cake involved.

The Fourth was Saturday and I did what I always do, which is close the windows and read and wait for it to be over. The fireworks were loud this year. Biscuit was unhappy. Junebug did not care, which is the difference between a dog and a cat in a single sentence.

It is July now and the garden is producing and the heat is the kind that sits on the porch and waits for you and does not leave when you ask it to. I am reading Isaiah and the tomatoes are still green and the blackberries are coming in faster than I can eat them and the week ahead has nothing in it that needs carrying, which I am learning to appreciate.
