At Trinity

Watercolor painting of a small white country church in summer morning light

"Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!" — Psalm 27:14

I was at Trinity this morning and the church was hot even with the fans going and the stone walls doing what stone walls do, which is try and mostly fail to keep the July out. Edna was in her pew. The Millers were two rows back. The sanctuary was about half full, which is a summer Sunday, and the people who were there were the people who show up in July, which is to say the faithful ones and the ones who have nowhere else to be and I have always suspected the two groups overlap more than either would admit.

I did not think about Thursday. Or rather I thought about it the way I think about a chair I have walked around for seven years, which is without thinking about thinking about it. The chair is there. I know where it is. I do not need to look at it to know it is in the room.

The sermon was about rest and I listened and I did not take notes and I did not need to. Sometimes church is for learning and sometimes church is for sitting in a room with other people who also showed up and letting the showing up be the thing. This was a showing-up Sunday and I am glad I went.

Ruby keeps a collection of prayers at her kitchen table. You can find them here.
