*"Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs."\* — Matthew 19:14*

Every child in the room already knew how the story ended, which is the best kind of Bible story to tell — the kind where they know the boy wins and they want to hear it anyway. David and Goliath this morning.

There were eight in the circle. Thomas was back, in the same chair he sat in last week, which I am noticing is becoming his chair the way children claim things without asking — they just sit there twice and it is theirs. Caleb was in his chair across the circle. A girl named Sophie who has been in this class since first grade and is now in fourth and will age out at the end of this year raised her hand and said, "Miss Ruby, how big was Goliath?" and I said the Bible says six cubits and a span and she said, "How big is that?" and I said about nine feet and her eyes went wide and Thomas said, "That's taller than the ceiling," and everyone looked up.

I love that. I love that a nine-year-old heard the number nine feet and his first thought was to measure it against the room he was sitting in. That is how children read the Bible. They put it in the room with them. They stand it next to the ceiling and they look up.

The stone hit Goliath in the forehead and the giant fell and the boy won and the children were satisfied, not because they were surprised but because the story did what the story always does, and the doing of it again is the point.

Jesus says let the children come and do not stop them. I have never stopped them. I have opened the door of this room every Sunday for forty-nine years and the children have come in and sat down and listened to the story and colored the pictures and gone home, and that is the whole ministry, and it is enough.

*Lord, the children came again. The boy won again. That is the report.*
