*"Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you." — 1 Peter 5:7*

It is Sunday evening and August is almost over.

I am in the chair by the lamp and the windows are open and the air tonight has a different quality than it did even last Sunday. Not cold. Not fall. But different. The kind of different that tells you the calendar is about to turn a page whether you are ready for it or not.

The week was a good week. The prayer on Monday morning was the kind that watches more than it asks. Henry Beale came by Tuesday with tomatoes from his garden, five big ones, the kind Earl used to grow, and the kitchen smelled like late August all afternoon. The garden is winding down. The Bible fell open to Psalm 119 and I sat with one verse until the coffee went cold. I thought about Olivia and how few Sundays she has left in my circle and I did not rush the thought. Saturday evening on the porch I missed Earl in the way you miss someone when a season is ending, which is deeper and quieter than the way you miss them on the anniversary.

September is a week away. The children come back to the classroom in a few weeks. The curriculum is still on the table from the last time I looked at it. The garden will start to let go in earnest and I will let it, because that is what August teaches me every year.

I am not anxious about the fall. I am not anxious about the garden closing or the days getting shorter or the year moving into the part of the year that is harder for me. I am not anxious, or if I am, the anxiety is small and I am casting it, the way the verse says, because he cares, and the caring is older than the anxiety and stronger than the season and it holds.

Until next Sunday.
