*"The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced." — Psalm 126:3*

It is Sunday evening and the first full week of September is behind us.

It was a week with a holiday at the front of it, which always makes a week feel like it is standing slightly off its feet. Monday I sat on the porch and smelled somebody else's charcoal and was glad about it without going over. Tuesday I noticed that my praying had changed with the light and that I had not been consulted. Wednesday the garden and I looked each other over and agreed about where things stood. Thursday was Earl and the gutters and the wood he split that I have still not burned. Friday was my mother and the vinegar and the singing I did not know I was learning. Yesterday I did not say a word until noon.

This afternoon I went over to the church and got the classroom ready. The chairs are in their circle and the crayons are sorted and the felt board is behind the door with all its fish accounted for. The class starts next Sunday. Forty-nine years and I still do the room the week before, because doing it the morning of would mean walking in unready, and I have never been able to do that.

I am aware that this letter is mostly small things. A cookout I did not attend. Tired flowers. Crayon stubs. Some weeks are made of large events and this was not one of them, and I have gotten old enough to prefer it this way.

The psalm says the Lord has done great things for us and we rejoiced. I read that this morning and thought: not this week, He didn't. This week He did small things. And then I sat with it a while longer and thought that a person who has been given seventy-seven years has no business deciding which of them were the great ones.

The house is quiet. Biscuit is asleep against the door. There is a light on in the kitchen I will get up and turn off in a minute.

Until next Sunday.
